Alabama Motor
Express (AMX) was founded in 1988 by Scott White. Starting in
Dothan, Alabama with only one truck, his initial plan was to
grow the fleet to 30 trucks. Within a year, customer
requirements dictated revisions to the plan. The business
grew rapidly from 1990 to 1996 to approximately 125 trucks.
In May 1997,
Summerford Truck Line was purchased resulting in a combined
fleet of 275 tractors. As part of the acquisition, the
business was moved to its current location in Ashford, AL.
The Ashford facility is located on 29 acres of land off US
Highway 84 East and includes a 10,000 square foot office
building and a 26 bay truck and trailer shop with over
30,000 square feet. In 2002, WDL (the AMX shop) began
offering service not only to AMX but also to outside fleets.
In August 1998,
the assets of Lane Trucking were acquired increasing the
total fleet to over 450 tractors and 1200 trailers. In
addition to the increased truck capacity, AMX also acquired
an affiliated brokerage firm, LTI Services, Inc., as part of
the Lane acquisition. LTI continues to operate to this date
at its Dothan location.
Through the late
90’s and early 2000's, bad economic conditions, driver
shortages and rising fuel prices took their toll on the
trucking industry. A large number of the marginal trucking
companies did not survive.
With many
carriers in "survival mode", AMX was able to remain
profitable and keep our service at the
highest levels with our customers. Since that time, we have
remained at our current driver strength of 320 tractors.
Plans for the
future call for a slow, calculated growth of about 5 to 10%
per year.
